Diploma Information

For Undergraduate students, your diploma will state your diploma name as indicated on your graduation application, your degree earned (Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, etc.), and your major (English, Criminal Justice, etc.).

If you achieved honors status, your graduation distinction (Latin Honors) designation (cum laude, summa cum laude, magna cum laude) will also be displayed on your diploma.

If you graduated with a double major, you receive one diploma that lists both majors (Accounting and Finance).

If you earned dual degrees, you receive two diplomas (Bachelor of Arts in English / Bachelor of Science in Psychology).

For graduate students, your diploma will state your diploma name as indicated on your Graduation Application, your degree earned (Master of Arts, Master of Business Administration, etc.), and your major (English, Special Education, Doctor of Education, etc.).

Minors, Concentrations, Departmental and Institutional honors are not listed on the diploma. They are displayed on the official transcript.

Diploma Name

By default, the name printed on your diploma will be the name you provided on your graduation application.

UNC Charlotte considers the diploma to be a ceremonial document that honors the completion of a degree. Your official transcript, which will list your legal name, is the official University record verifying the conferral of a degree. However, because some countries may require your diploma for various legal, immigration, and employment purposes, UNC Charlotte recommends printing your legal name on your diploma if you plan to live, study, or work outside of the United States.

If you need to make changes to your legal name, then please complete a Demographic Change Form.

Suffixes such as Sr., Jr., III, etc., may be used

The following variations are not acceptable:

  • No prefix or suffix relating to a title or credential is allowed (e.g., Dr., DMD, Esq., Mrs., Mr., etc.).
  • No names enclosed by parenthesis or quotation marks will be included as the diploma name.
Withholding of Diplomas

Students must fulfill all financial obligations before their diploma or certificate is released. The Office of the Registrar will not be able to issue diplomas to students who owe money to the institution. Students should check Student Self-Service and review any email correspondence concerning financial holds or obligations.

Diploma mailing

Students should expect to receive their diploma in the mail 6-8 weeks after their official graduation date, if there are no financial holds on your account. Diplomas will be mailed to the address provided at the time the student applied for graduation. Students should provide a mailing address where they will be able to receive mail 6-8 weeks after graduation.

If you need to update your diploma name or diploma mailing address, Undergraduate students can email graduation@charlotte.edu and Graduate students can email their college liaison. These requests must be made at least one week prior to your official graduation date (conferral date).

If your diploma(s) have been ordered, the address cannot be updated; always fill out a Change of Address Form with the U.S. Postal Service in case your diploma has been mailed prior to the diploma address update in our system.

Apostille/notarized diplomas

Official documents issued in one country and intended to be used in another country must be authenticated to be recognized as valid. If the foreign country is a member of The Hague Convention, an Apostille is required. If the foreign country is not a member of The Hague Convention, Authentication and Authority is normally required. The Hague Convention country membership list

If a student has accepted employment in a foreign country or is returning home to a foreign country, he or she may need to have an official transcript and/or diploma legalized by either an Apostille or Authentication and Authority. Most foreign countries require a diploma versus a transcript, so it is important to find out which is required. Additionally, please be sure to obtain the required documentation prior to leaving North Carolina.

The University of North Carolina at Charlotte does not apostille diplomas, rather the Office of the Registrar is able to prepare your diploma for apostille services. Individuals who wish for the Office of the Registrar to prepare their diploma for apostille services must order a duplicate/replacement diploma. Individuals wishing to have their diploma or transcript prepared for apostille services should reach out to the Graduation Services team at graduation@charlotte.edu for more information.
